In front of Kasuga Taisha shrine near Nara Kasugayama brewery in Nara prefecture, there was a place called Apple Garden where the 80th Emperor Takakura planted the first apple tree which was brought to Japan along the Silk Road. Unfortunately, the apple trees withered during the war, but in 1957, farmers from the distant Nagano Prefecture (famous for apple production) donated new trees and the garden was revived.
The owner of the brewery, Mr Yagi was inspired by the story of the Apple Garden and decided to produce a liqueur using 'Shinshu' apples from Nagano prefecture in the hope that his sake would connect people in distant prefectures, just like the apple trees that came from the Silk Road to Japan.
Drink: delicious on the rocks, straight or use it in cocktails. Try drink it warm to enjoy enhanced sweetness and sourness of the apple.
